Librarians in the Huddle: Supporting Athletes Success On and Off the Field

A session at 2015 Maryland Library Association & Delaware Library Association Joint Annual Conference

  • Patty Clark
  • Jenny Erdmann

Thursday 7th May, 2015

9:00am to 10:00am (EST)

Coaches and librarians have similar roles: scheduling training and exercises to develop skills, ensuring the effective use of resources and fostering ethical behavior. The collaboration between librarians and field hockey coaches at Virginia Wesleyan College resulted in a preseason instruction session for players to develop information literacy skills while researching injury prevention techniques. As the field hockey students presented their findings, discussed and defended their use of authoritative, unbiased and current sources, it was obvious that the library should explore additional collaborations with International Programs and Model United Nations, as well as other sports teams. In this session, discover how librarians can develop activities, assignments and discussions that enable more learning opportunities outside of traditional courses.
