The Uncommon Denominator : Bloomberg for Mobile

A session at Talk UX

Thursday 5th March, 2015

9:30am to 9:55am (GMT)

For the increasingly connected finance professionals that we design for at Bloomberg, having a strategy that meets the demand and remains scalable and usable in a mobile context has been anything but simple. During this talk, I’ll share the Mobile Design Team’s experience and current thinking as we hit the limits of download sizes, scalable navigation, ergonomics and physical accommodations in order to provide the same service to our users when they are away from the Bloomberg Terminal.

Yvonne Caravia heads the Mobile UX Team at Bloomberg

Yvonne Caravia heads the Mobile UX Team at Bloomberg and is passionate about changing expectations for what’s possible in the context of mobile and emerging platforms. The mobile team works on extending the amazingly complex Bloomberg financial service in order to truly move with it’s customers and enable their full potential when away from their desks.

Yvonne brings over a decade of experience in designing for mobile and connected devices, well before the dawn of the iPhone. Prior to joining Bloomberg, she co-founded Mobients, a mobile design firm that pioneered verticals in the U.S. such as mobile banking, mobile retail and second screen experiences for clients such as Citi, Chase, NBC, Delta and Home Depot.

The Uncommon Denominator : Bloomberg for Mobile

Expectations for what an app should do have changed since the saturation of smartphones worldwide in 2012. As screen sizes and form factors continue to grow, the evolution from a ‘mobile phone’ to a convenient and pocketable computer seems clear. More and more, users want access to the same content on their phone as on their desktops and are comfortable performing complex tasks on a touchscreen interface — even willingly sacrificing efficiency for the convenience of using the device in their pocket, a.k.a. the “lazy laptop”.
