Cisco's Agile Journey, Continuous Delivery and Scaling Scrum

A session at Scrum Australia 2016

Thursday 28th April, 2016

4:15pm to 5:05pm (EST)

Cisco is changing the way Cisco does business through Continuous Delivery and Scaled Scrum. We would like to share how we have moved, on a massive scale, a $40B enterprise of 25,000 engineers across the globe, from 100% waterfall-based delivery to Scrum delivery.

Today, a strong partnership and increased collaboration within the business, is driving delivery of new business outcomes faster. However, our journey started over three years ago. It was gradual, and is still an ongoing evolution of mobilising the agile transformation: strategically and tactically. We started with executive leadership’s strong desire for recognising the inevitable need for a change, in the way we enable business capabilities: from waterfall-based, 6 to 9 months delivery cycles, to agile-incremental weekly and monthly delivery capabilities. We experienced our share of challenges, from just getting started, to organically creating a critical core of passionate agile leaders throughout the enterprise.

We will share how we organised and created the momentum, whilst overcoming various challenges along the way. These included getting beyond long-standing cultural resistance, to the practical matter of scaling Scrum from ground zero, through strategic planning and systematic execution, across the globally-distributed organisations within Cisco.
