The DevOps movement is finally starting to become a hot topic amongst enterprise .NET developers. Too many of these groups begin their DevOps journey with tool selection when in reality their process/thinking is more important than the tech. They are looking for “DevOps in a Box” which they think will solve their developer/operations woes. Those of us who have successful implemented DevOps in any capacity know this is a red herring.
Most .NET developers don’t realize Microsoft provides a free tool called MSDeploy which will likely serve their deployment automation needs at least initially. Using MSDeploy, with little investment, can allow them to defer tool selection until they have more experience and know better how DevOps will work in their organization. Their goal should be to implement small but valuable experiments that incrementally improve the software delivery process.
In this presentation, we will see how easy it is to use MSDeploy for websites, web services, SQL databases and scheduled tasks. MSDeploy will not solve all deployment automation issues but in our experiences with 40+ software products it has been very successful.
