Seek in 2012 was a happy place, well it was if you weren't writing code and designing solutions. If you were it kind of sucked, especially if you worked in Ops. Sure we were Agile, well down that road in fact, but we were hamstrung by a technical debt legacy that was due to everything we built being tied to run on Microsoft Windows. The world we inhabited was one that experienced constant failures, reactive decision making and a hero culture that led to countless late nights for Ops people and production deployments that numbered 2 per month. It took us too long to get things done and we weren’t focused on the right things as we led with a “technology first” mindset – not one that focused on people and process till well after the fact. Then in 2013 an ambitious project to get rid of testing environments took us into our first foray into the mythical land of AWS. From this point the last 3 years have been a bit of a blur, there were tears (both pain and joy), we were tested at every step of the way, withstood some serious challenges and tough questions but somehow we got to the other side with a now incredibly diverse technology platform that would have seemed like a fantasy back in 2012. Oh and we recently hit a record of over 400 deployments to Production in a single month!
This talk is our story, it’s not sugar-coated and does not shy away from the bad decisions we made. There are uncomfortable moments in this that we’re not fond of but there are great and humorous stories in here too. These are the reasons why we want to share them with you, so you hopefully do not go through the trials and tribulations we did. This is not a tech-heavy presentation, it's actually a lot more about people and processes, so there is definitely something in it for everyone.
