Progression 2 - Evaluative Storytelling: Using Video and Pop Culture to Guide TechComm Design

A session at Spectrum 2016 Conference

  • Norman Gayford

Monday 18th April, 2016

11:30am to 12:30pm (EST)

This progression demonstrates how to use storytelling to humanize the otherwise mechanistic process of evaluating beginner technical writing. I will show how I create mini videos to guide the work of technical writing students, but this process can be used to help any beginning technical writer. These four-minute videos use pop culture memes to convey how a reviewer experiences a first draft of a technical document. In turn, video recipients can use this input to improve their documentation design and writing.
