Break Out Session 3: Student Electoral Registration: How can Universities Support it?

A session at SROC 2016

Tuesday 5th April, 2016

4:15pm to 5:15pm (GMT)

Institution: The University of Sheffield

How can universities facilitate the process of student electoral registration? In 2014, the UK’s move away from an electoral system of “household registration” to a system of Individual Electoral Registration (IER) brought into question the mechanisms by which HE students are encouraged and enabled to participate in electoral processes.

In 2014, in partnership with Sheffield City Council, and with the support of the local MP and Students’ Union, the University of Sheffield launched an enhanced student registration process which incorporated an avenue for students to register for electoral purposes. The approach adopted led to Sheffield boasting one of, if not the, highest level of student electoral registration in the country. This session will review the challenges we faced, the questions we asked ourselves, and describe the process and system solutions we arrived at.
