Inquiry Science is R.E.A.L.: From Content to Concept

Participants in this session will conduct an authentic STEAM investigation and develop advanced questioning skills in order to guide their own knowledge building and abstraction of the activity concept’s meaning; as well as correcting students’ conceptual errors, facilitate student selection of appropriate deep-learning strategies, and modify student learning behaviors. Students engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), STEAM (add Art), and STREAM (add reading and research) activities often resort to rote memorization of content mostly because they fail to grasp the concepts that the activity content embraces. R.E.A.L. stands for “Rich Environments for Active Learning” and represents comprehensive instructional systems aimed at promoting study and investigation, encouraging growth of learner responsibility, initiative and decision making, cultivating collaboration among students and teachers and generating learning activities that promote higher-order thinking processes to help students develop rich and complex knowledge structures” (Grabinger, Scott, & Dunlap, 1995.)
